Dubai Portrait Photoshoot. What you need to know
Let’s Keep It Simple
The idea of a portrait photoshoot can feel a little overwhelming, right? You might be thinking, "I’m not sure how to pose", or "What if I feel awkward in front of the camera?" Don’t worry—these thoughts are completely normal! I have been there as well! It turned out that the most important part was to just enjoy the procee and do not be harsh on yourself. And trust the photographer, of course. This is why it's important to look through all the photographer's work to get this feeling " I want to see myself on that photos, they feel so good".
You don’t need to be a model or know exactly what to do. The best photos happen when you’re relaxed and just being yourself. My job is to guide you and make the experience easy and enjoyable.
In this post, I’ll share a few simple tips to help you prepare for your session. With a little planning, you’ll feel more confident and ready to capture something real and beautiful—just as you are.
Here’s how you can prepare for a portrait photoshoot:
1. Clothing and Style
- Plan your outfits in advance. Choose a few options that reflect your personality. Avoid clothing with large logos or bright patterns. The main focus should be on you, not the brand you are wearing, right? I suggest one outfit for a short photoshoot, or you can bring one or two additional pieces of clothing to use as well. For a longer session, up to three outfits will be sufficient. Make sure all clothes are clean and pressed.
- Colors
Neutral or pastel tones usually work best, but a pop of color can add a nice touch.
- Textures and accessories
Knitted items, scarves, or jewelry can add depth, but don’t overdo it—keep it simple to avoid distractions.
If we’re focusing on close-up shots, pay attention to the details—clean collars, wrinkle-free clothing, etc.
2. Makeup and Hair
Keep it natural.
Go for light, natural makeup that highlights your features. Avoid anything too shiny. I know someone might have told you that you need brighter makeup for a photoshoot, but I’m against it. The camera captures you as you are. I remember my wedding morning in 2011 when the makeup artist tried to apply more mascara and fake eyelashes, and I asked her to remove them. She was reluctant, insisting that I didn’t understand. But my inner voice was right. I wanted to see my face in the mirror, not someone else’s.
Hair.
Choose a hairstyle that feels like you—something simple and neat. Slightly undone hair can also look great for a more natural vibe.
If you’re unsure, consider hiring a professional makeup artist or hairstylist.
Nails.
Trim or manicure your nails in advance. It's always a good idea to make them look nice and neat. Don't do it too bright, pastel colors will do magic.
3. Skin Prep
Moisturize your skin the day before the shoot, and avoid trying any new skincare products.
If your session is in the morning, get a good night’s sleep and stay hydrated the day before. The best preparation before the photoshoot is just to relax, read a nice book before bed and have a feeling that tomorrow will be a new interesting day, only good vibes.
4. Bringing Personal Touches
Feel free to bring items you love—a scarf, a book, a mug, wrist watch, a bracelet, small earrings, or anything meaningful to you. These small details can help create a cozy and authentic feel. If it’s for a more official or branding photoshoot, consider bringing props that reflect your personality or profession. A laptop, a notebook (preferably in a single color), your mobile phone, a coffee cup, or even a small bag or backpack can work well if they represent you. These are just a few ideas to get you started!
If you wear glasses, make sure they’re clean. If you have a few pairs, bring them along to see what works best.
Arrive a little earlier to settle in and get comfortable with the space.
5. Mindset
Try to rest before the shoot so you look fresh.
Relax and enjoy the process. This is your time to shine and show your uniqueness. Think of this session not as a photoshoot, but as a moment to celebrate yourself. It’s not about being perfect—it’s about capturing your essence. Some of the best photos come from spontaneous expressions. Don’t worry about every detail—sometimes a laugh, a small movement, or even a pause creates the most authentic images.
If you have any questions or ideas, let me know beforehand. Together, we’ll create photos that feel real and true to you!
Stiff, posed photos rarely feel real. Instead, we’ll focus on creating a space where you feel comfortable enough to move naturally, express yourself, and just be. A slight tilt of your head, a soft smile, or even a candid laugh often turns out to be more meaningful than any rehearsed pose.
Remember, the goal isn’t to look “perfect.” It’s about capturing you—your personality, your energy, your story.
